Love and affection source of happy world, His Holiness tells followers as he concludes Japan visit

DHARMSHALA /TOKYO----- Dalai Lama today gave a day-long teaching on Heart Sutra and 37 Practices of a Boddhisattva to thousands of devotees comprising Japanese, Mongolians, Chinese, and Koreans in Tokyo.

His Holiness said all the religious traditions in the world, despite having different ideologies, have a common purpose of promoting positive human values like love and affection. All of them preach tolerance, forgiveness, contentment and self-discipline as antidotes to negative emotions like anger and hatred, which he said are the real causes of problems facing the world. So different religious traditions should respect each other as they have a common purpose.

He said those who do not believe in religion that they are not concerned with love and compassion is wrong, adding that problems facing at both family and community level, including conflicts and environment result from lack of inner human values. Whether one is believer or non believer, all human beings wish for love and affection, which he said is the core teaching of every religion. 

His Holiness said Buddhism, which also preach promotion of love, affection, tolerance and contentment like other religions, its ideology of dependent arising holds the key to eliminate negative emotions like ignorance that give rise to all the ills in the world.Dalai Lama said all the 7 billion human beings wish for happiness and do not want suffering. The humans have a greater potential as compared to other beings due to our unique of intelligence, he said, adding, but the problems which humanity face is our own creation.

He said secular ethics is the only way to bring lasting peace and happiness in the world. “The modern education system is very oriented to material development rather than inner human values. As a result of my last 30 years of discussion with scientists and educationists, we are of the same view that education system should include curriculum focusing on promotion of secular ethics and inner values,” he said. ” The source of our happiness is love and affection,” he added.

“It is not enough to pray to the Buddha. What is more important is to study and understand his teaching not of faith but through experiment,” he added. “We are followers of ancient India’s Nalanda tradition and we must it keep alive by studying it.”

In concluding remarks, His Holiness told the devotees that they should not say they have received the Dalai Lama’s blessings. The real blessing by studying the Buddha’s teachings and commentaries of ancient India’s Nalanda masters. 

“During my two-week stay in Japan, I felt very happy in meeting many Japanese friends. I hope my talks will be of some help for you. The most important thing is to study and contemplate on the teachings in your daily lives.”

Tomorrow, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will give separate audiences to over 100 Chinese from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, 50 Mongolians and members of the Tibetan community based in Japan. He will then depart for Delhi.
