Selfless service towards the suffering humanity was real service towards the society and medical professionals needed to dedicate themselves towards the same. This was stated by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister, while addressing the fraternity of Indian Medical Association, at Dharamshala, after he laid foundation stone of the IMA Bhawan, today.
Chief Minister said that it was the duty of the children to serve their parents. He said that the word ‘religion’ was being mis-interpreted as ‘Dharma’ whereas it had to be ‘Duty’. He said that it was ‘duty’ of the children to respect and care their parents and had nothing to do with the religious aspect. He said that quality medical education and health institutions were being set up in the state and ESI Medical College and Hospital was coming up at Ner Chowk in Mandi district, where admission to MBBS was likely to start from next academic session which would add to production of medical professionals.
Prof. Dhumal lauded the initiatives of the IMA towards social service. He said that IMA was a model of Public Private Partnership (PPP) and deserve all appreciation. He said that people of Himachal Pradesh had been serving the armed forces from generation to generation and the State had the highest number in percentage to the population of the State. He said that the youth of the state had shown their valour and bravery at the borders and won top decorative awards in the country. He congratulated the IMA for winning two national level awards which speak of the role it was playing in health sector.
Chief Minister said that the State had launched ‘Beti Hai Anmol’ programme to check female foeticide which was responsible for decreasing population of female child. He said that the birth rate of the girls in the age group of zero to six years of age was falling at an alarming speed and the state government had to launch ‘Beti Hai Anmol’ Programme to check the trend of carrying sex determination test practices. He said that the State Government had launched special tourism packages to the families visiting Himachal with their daughters and were provided one additional day free stay to emphasise the importance of the daughters in the family. He said that the endeavours had started showing positive outcome which further motivates the government to work more vigorously to protect the girl child.
Prof. Dhumal appreciated the contribution of the medical fraternity which had made Himachal a role model in health sector in the country. He said that the state could create infrastructure to meet the requirements of medical sector but the services had to be delivered by the medical professionals. He said that it was during his earlier term that Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda and Dental College, Shimla were obtained recognition of the Medical Council and Dental Council of India.
Dr. Rajiv Bindal, Health and Ayurved Minister, said that unless a medical professional was not mentally willing to dedicate himself towards the service of suffering humanity, the objective of building a healthy and strong society would not be achieved. He congratulated the medical fraternity for envisioning setting up of state level diabetes centre at Dharamshala to deliver people volunteer service.
Health Minister said that the present shape and status of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College was due to the consistent efforts of Prof. Dhumal who had personally been pursuing every related with quarter concern to make the college a Centre of Excellent Medical Education. He said that five seats of PG had been started in the college and 51 PGI seats had been applied to Medical Council of India in Tanda. He said that super speciality services would also be available to the people in the college. He appealed to the medical fraternity to make HImachal Anaemia Free State in the country as the State had targeted blood sample of 20 lakh Himachali during current year. He said that State was in need of Medical Specialists where IMA needed to lend its cooperative hand.
Dr. Ashok Handa, State President, Indian Medical Association, welcomed the Chief Minister and thanked him for laying foundation stone of the State IMA Bhawan at Dharamshala.
Dr. Atul Mahajan, General Secretary of the Association said that IMA happened to be the largest medical organisation in the country recognised by WHO and UNO. He said that State IMA had won two national level awards during past five years. He said that the members of IMA prefer service of mankind over earning. He said that ‘Aao Gaon Chalen’ a dream project of the organisation had decided to adopt one village by one branch to ensure complete care of the villagers. He said that ‘Care of Elderly’ was another dream project of the association where senior citizens are addressed through camps. He said that the new building would have a complete floor for diabetes patients.
