Golden Jubilee year of Rashtriya Military School, Chail


CHAIL----State Government would urge the Union Minister of Defence to consider admission to Himachali students in Rashitrya Military School, Chail and also to strengthen the 50 years old school with elaborated activities to produce best officers to serve in the Armed Forces.

This was stated by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister in the address he delivered at Rashtirya Military School, Chail on its '50 years in H.P. celebration' organised by Georgian Association in School auditorium at Chail today.

Chief Minister said that H.P. had best military talents who had proved their worth and calibre during war and peace since the India attained independence. He said that the State Government had raised its demand with the Defence Ministry to provide opportunity to the soldiers hailing from H.P. for alleviate to the officer cadre in different organs of the military forces. He said that Himachal was happened to be nursery of warriors who had been contributing significantly towards the military services during war and protecting national boundaries.

Prof. Dhumal said that the first PVC awardee of independent India Major Som Nath Sharma hailed from H.P. and again in 1999 during Kargil Operation out of Four PVCs awarded, two were awarded to soldiers hailing from H.P. He said that there was need for providing opportunity to H.P. students for the induction to the officer ranks. He said that the State Government would be extending all help for establishment of more military schools in the State. He said that the State Government had raised the demand with Ministry of Defence to allow admission to local students in the military school. He said that the capable students would be eligible to serve as officer and lead the various operation in different areas. He hoped that Chail Military School would be contributing significantly in producing best officer to armed forces of the country to lead various operations.

Chief Minister said that State Government would be approaching and requesting the H.P. Cricket Association to lend its supportive hand in infrastructure creation in the World's Highest Cricket Stadium at Chail in association with the Military School so that students were provided opportunity to polish their sports talents.

Prof. Dhumal said that State Government was entering into agreement with ADB to borrow Rs. 450 crore and Chail Circuit would be included in tourism promotion activities. He said that Rs. 5 crore were being spent under Chail Circuit. Rs. 7 crore is being spent over Chail- Goura road widening and improvement. He said that Rs. 4.08 crore would also be spent on DWSS by lifting water from Giri khad to meet water requirement in Chail.Chief Minister said that 33 KV Sub-Station would also be constructed at a cost of Rs. 4 crore to meet quality power supply requirements. He said that parking slots were also being developed at Chail and Rs. 3.85 crore also being spent over wayside amenities. He said that Gaura was also being developed as Tourist Destination. He sanctioned Rs. 5 lakh for high mast light at Chail and Rs. 5 lakh for construction of gate to school entrance, out of MPLAD.

Chief Minister complimented the School Management for the grand opening of the 50 years in Himachal Pradesh' celebration and the cultural programme presented by the students of the institution since the school had completed 88 years of the formation and had been established at Chail in 50 years ago.

Chief Minister launched Chail website www.chail.in and honoured ex- Georgians, their wards and others who had studied in the school and earned laurels through their achievements in different discipline. He also awarded the students of the school for their outstanding achievements in different activities.

School Principal Lt. Col. V.K. Bhatt welcomed the Chief Minister and other dignitaries and thanked them all for their benign presence on landmark celebration of the institution. He also read out the school report and said that the school was foucussing upon quality education. He thanked Chief Minister for the patronage to the school and hoped that it would continue to be so in school future endeavours as well.

Shri Vipon Pubby, Resident Editor, Indian Express, Chandigarh and an ex-Georgian, student of the prestigious school also welcomed Chief Minister to his old school. He said that Prof. Dhumal happened to be the First BJP Chief Minister to rule H.P. for full five year term and under his leadership again BJP Government was formed in the State. He credited Prof. Dhumal for winning Best State Award among big States category with his visionary policies and programmes.

Shri Sajay Sood, Chairman, Chail Heritage Foundation also spoke.

Students also presented an impressive cultural programme to mark the celebration.

Dr. Rajiv Bindal, Health Minister, Shri Virender Kashyap, M.P, Lok Sabha, Shri A.S. Rathore, Deputy Commissioner, other senior officers and prominent persons, senior military officers and old students of the school attended the inaugural ceremony.
--Brief History

The school with its sister institution at Jhelum (Pakistan) came into existence after the First World War with a generous donation of Rs 2.51akh from King George V's Patriotic Fund. The foundation-stone of the school was laid by the then Prince Wales in Feb 1922 and the school started functioning at Jalandhar Cantt in 1925. The School was christened King George's Royal Indian Military School which was later changed to King George's Royal Indian Military College (KGRIMC).

This institution was established with the aim of imparting fee education to the sons of JCOs, NCOs and OR to prepare them for various Army Examinations including the Indian Special Certificate of Education. The entire curriculum was based on Military requirements with English as medium of instruction.

The strength of the school was 250 and the staff mostly consisted of Military personnels. During the World War-II, the school was upgrade as college. One hundred more boys (then called cadets) were admitted under the expansion scheme. The conditions of admission were relaxed to accommodate the near relatives of Army Personnel and admission was thrown open to all branches of Armed Forces. The college was affiliated to the. Punjab University for Matriculation and Intermediate examinations. This Institution produced a large number of Officers. The college was renamed as King George's School and shifted to NOWGONG (Bundelkhand region of MP) in August 1952 where it was housed in Old Kitchner College buildings.

After Independence it was felt that these schools should impart quality education and have a wider social basis. Consequently these schools were, organised in September 1952 and half of the seats of total of 300 were thrown open to sons of Civilians and Armed Force Officers.

On 01 January, 1966, the school was renamed as Chail Military School and in 1966 it was changed to Military School Chail. Now this School is known as Rashtriya Military School Chail w.e.f. 25th June 2007. The School is preparing the cadets for Senior School Certificate Examination of Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi under 10+2 scheme.

The earlier, Motto of the School was "PLAY THE GAME". It was changed in the year 1966 to Sanskrit words ''SHEELAM PARAM BHUSHNAM' which means in English "CHARACTER IS THE GREATEST VIRTUE".

The aim of the school is to impart quality education and prepare the cadets to join the Armed Forces as Officers.
