SHIMLA---The High Court of Himachal Pradesh directed the State Government to file a status report stating therein that what steps have been taken to curb mining mafia throughout the state and what action has been taken against those officers of the district administration, who allowed the mining mafia to construct the road which was later on dismantled in Palampur, District Kangra. The court also asked the authorities that what were the reasons for collapsing of the Kandrouri Bridge near Indora, District Kangra, on 11th August, 2016 which was a link between Pathankot and Indora. The court further asked to explain as what were the reasons which necessitated the transfer of DC, Una and ASP, Badi. The respondents were also directed to produce the entire record relating to the transfers of the said officers.
Division Bench comprising the Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice Sandeep Sharma passed these orders on a petition taken up suo moto by the Court as Public Interest Litigation on a news item published in the Tribune on 13/08/2016 under the headline " Roads constructed by mining mafia dismantled". It was reported in the news that the SDM, Palampur had received complaints from the residents of Sulaha area that illegal mining was going on unchecked in Neugal River near Paror at Palampur. Which is damaging local paths, water channels, road and cremation ground. It was further reported that the illegal mining was not only resulting in large-scale environmental degradation but also causing loss to the state exchequer as the mining material was being lifted without paying royalty to the state government.
During hearing of the petition it was observed by the court that it is not understandable where the district administration was sleeping when the mining mafia was constructing the road, which stand now dismantled.
