Dharmshala-----Residents of Dehra under the banner of the Central University Sangharsh Morcha launched an agitation demanding the setting up of Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) at Dehra. They also started a chain hunger strike in the town.
The protesting residents gathered at the Shaheed Samarak in the town and performed puja before launching the agitation. After the puja, they took out a protest march through main markets of the town and raised slogans in support of setting up of the Central University at Dehra.
The protestors were carrying placards in support of their demand. They returned to the Shaheed Samarak after the rally and started a chain hunger strike as part of the agitation. On the first day of the chain hunger strike yesterday, Kewal Walia, president, Beopar Mandal, Dehra, Karnail Singh, president, Jan Kalayan Uthaan Manch, and Mohinder Singh, general secretary, Dehra Truck Union, sat on a hunger strike. They demanded that the Central University be set up at Dehra and there should be no politics in it.
Pawan Sharma, coordinator of the Central University Sangharsh Morcha (CUSM), said the morcha had got full support of the people of Dehra subdivision cutting across party lines. He said social, cultural, political and religious organisations had extended their full support to CUSM.
He said Senior Citizens Forum president JC Azad, All India Jat Kalyan Sabha members, District Congress president Nardev Kanwar, State Pong Dam Advisory Committee HKG Dogra, Jaswan Congress Committee secretary Gurbachan Singh, VHP leader Kuldeep Kumar, BJP leader Susheel Kalia, District Congress secretary Arvind Dhiman and Zila Parishad member Shayam Dulari had extended full support to the agitation on day one.
He alleged that Dehra was a tehsil in 1868 and since then efforts had been made to make it non existent. He said the agitation would continue till their demand was met by both the state and Central governments.
