SHIMLA---- High Court of Himachal Pradesh today directed the parties to file status report in the matter pertaining to the contaminated drinking water supply in Shimla Town on of before 7th January, 2016.
Today the Chief Secretary, Additional Secretary (I&PH), Additional Secretary (Health) to the Government of Himachal Pradesh, Engineer–In–Chief, I&PH & Commissioner, M.C., Shimla were present before the court.
However, for the time being, all the officers have been exempted from the personal appearance by the Court. The court also appointed Sh. Ramakant Sharma Sr. Advocate as Amicus Curiae to assist the court in this matter.
A Division Bench comprising the Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Jutice Tarlok Singh Chauhan passed these orders on a petition taken up suo moto by the Court as Public Interest Litigation on the news items published in various news paper on 03.01.2016 regarding contaminated water supply in the Shimla city. It was reported in the various news papers that Ashwani Khud water, which caters to the need of drinking water of 1/3rd of Shimla town, is highly contaminated. The news papers reports even suggested that the swage mixed water was being supplied to the residents, which has created an epidemic like situation in the Town. It was also reported in the news jaundice and other water born diseases are engulfing the people of the town and the number is on the increase day by day. During hearing this matter it was observed by the court that drinking water is one of the basic necessities for human existence on the Earth. Because of the apathy on the part of the Authorities concerned, the people of Shimla town, do not have access to clean drinking water and are falling prey to many water born diseases.
