CM releases summary of Menstrual Hygiene Awareness

SHIMLA---Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur today released a summary report of 'Menstrual Hygiene Awareness and Its Eco Friendly Management in District Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh' brought out by Dr. Richa Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Hamirpur here today.

            While appreciating the efforts of the Deputy Commissioner and her team, Chief Minister said that menstrual hygiene and safe disposal of sanitary napkins is necessary for society.  He said that girls particularly in rural areas were not aware about menstruation and hence they face many difficulties and challenges at homes, schools and work places.

            Chief Minister said that it was essential to educate and sensitize  the girls and women regarding menstrual hygiene and health hazards associated with this natural process. He said that modern techniques like incinerators for safe and eco friendly disposal of used sanitary napkins must also be promoted. He expressed hope that the study would go a long way in sensitizing the women folk regarding this vital issue.

            Deputy Commissioner Dr. Richa Verma said that the main objective to conduct this survey was to compare the perceptions of the different aspects of menstrual hygiene amongst adolescent girls and women.  She said that an eco-friendly and affordable incinerator  'Ashudhinashak Yantra' for safe disposal of sanitary napkins would be used as a part of action plan for menstrual hygiene management in Hamirpur district.

            Vice Chairperson, Managing Committee, State Red Cross Society and wife of Chief Minister Dr. Sadhna Thakur and Additional Chief Secretary, Social Justice and Empowerment Smt. Nisha Singh were also present on the occasion.
