KULLU ------UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi today addressed a massive rally at the historic Dhalpur Maidan here.
In her eleven minute brief address, she took credit for major achievements like Food Security Bill, One Rank One Pension, RTI and MGNREGA.
She also highlighted various schemes for the uplift of the weaker sections of the society.
Earlier, Ms Gandhi was accorded a warm welcome on her arrival at Bhuntar airport in Kullu. She was received by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, his wife and Congress candidate from Mandi Pratibha Singh, his ministerial colleagues, state Congress President Sukhwinder Sukhu and other senior officers of the state government along with some local citizens.
The local people had to bear the agony of being treated as terrorist on the VVIPs visit with police personnel getting a chance to harass and even frisk the well known faces of the society. The children and women waited under the scorching sun without water till 1230 hrs till Sonia's arrival. The Congress party had made no arrangements for the huge crowd except for large number of chairs. Even the dias remained vacant for over 20 minutes before her arrival. There was lot of chaos and the microphones were being checked even after many local leaders had addressed the gathering since 1000 hrs.
The vehicular movement between Kullu and Bhuntar was also halted for over four hours causing huge inconvenience to the residents and the tourists. Kullu-Manali road also witnessed a traffic jam due to large number of people flocking in the town to catch the glimpse of Ms Gandhi.
State Congress president Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during his address alleged that the BJP collected donations to build the Ram temple in Ayodhya but have misused the funds. He added that the Gandhi family had laid their life for the country and Sonia Gandhi had relinquished the PMs post in 2004, that was now the only ambition of BJP's Narendra Modi.
Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said India's GDP growth had increased from US dollar 500 billion in 2004 to US dollar 1.8 trillion in 2014. He said per capita income had also increased during the previous decade of Congress regime and average life expectancy of male and females had also increased by five and six years respectively. He boasted of increasing the FDI by over 15 times as compared to previous NDA regime.
Earlier, HPCC vice-president Harsh Mahajan, general secretary Sunder Singh and other Congress leaders also addressed the gathering.--
