Dharamshala, Feb 20 : Tension gripped the Jawalamukhi degree College in this district when the National Students Union of India (NSUI) held protest demanding the college which was being run by the Jawalamukhi Temple Trust should be taken over by the government.
The situation turned tense when Education minister I D Dhiman arrived here for attending the annual distribution function and inaugurating of the Science block in the college and the NSUI protestors taking placards in hand supporting their demand.
The protest irritated the supporters of the Minister and ABVP activists which resulted in a clash between the two groups.
According to the eye witnesses the NSUI protestors which included a girl activist were assaulted during the clash. The NSUI activists were forced to go out of the premises by the police.
Sub Divisional Police Officer Dehra Mr Paras Ram when contacted told UNI that heavy police deployment was made in the college to avert any major incident. The NSUI students who were in small number carrying placards raised slogans and two groups of students clashed.
Timely intervention of the police separated the clashing groups and saved the situation from taking any ugly turn.
DSP Paras Ram said that later on the annual function of the college continued and the Minister also inaugurated the science. He said that no case was registered in this connection and no arrests were made.
Minister for Food and supplies Mr Ramesh Dhawala, who represents the constituency, was also present in the college premises when the students clashed.
NSUI leader Neeraj Kumar said NSUI was demanding that the principal of the college take over the college and provide better infrastructure in the larger interests of students community which was resented by the supporters of ruling party resulting in assaulting and beating of NSUI activists including Bhavna Kumari which he described was deplorable.
Congress leader Nardev Kanwar also condemned the incident and demanded a high level inquiry in to the incident. He demanded that police should register a case against the miscreants and nab them.
State Chief Of Youth Congress Man Mohan Katoch alleged that the government. to cover up its failures was using police force to curb the voice of the people which was condemnable.
