Governor stresses on giving fillip to Red Cross activities

SHIMLA----Governor Acharya Devvrat who is also the President of H.P State Red Cross Society said that Red Cross activities should be given fillip and efforts should be made to generate more funds so that more needy persons could be benefited. He asked the State Red Cross to take up the matter with the State Government to make appropriate policy for those employees who were working with Red Cross for more than 10 years.
The Governor was addressing the Annual General Meeting of the State Red Cross Society at Raj Bhawan today.
He urged all District Red Cross branches to ensure timely submission of State share of 30 percent of their income under apportionment of subscription so that 15 percent of this donation could be further sent to the national office. He underlined the need for expansion of scope of Red Cross activities for generating more income adding that help of corporate sector and business associations should be sought for achieving this objective which would go a long way in supplementing the humanitarian activities being undertaken by the State Red Cross Society. He also urged to send annual audit report regularly to the State Red Cross.
The Governor directed to take up the matter with concerned authorities to make Red Cross donations tax free. He said that a universal sense of solidarity towards all those in need of help and assistance was important. He appealed to associate more people with Red Cross activities to make it a mass movement and stressed to start membership drive for increasing the number of volunteers.
He said that mass awareness about plantation activities for environmental protection, 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' campaign, zero budgeting natural farming and 'Gau Palan' should be undertaken by all. He expressed concern over the problem of drug abuse and urged all the Deputy Commissioners who are the Chairman of District Red Cross society to generate mass awareness about the ill effects of drugs. He said that 'Kisan Melas' should be organized and drug addiction centers should be set up at district level.
The Governor honoured Deputy Commissioners of Lahaul and Spiti, Una and Sirmour for best performance in respect of submission of State Red Cross Share.
Earlier, Shri Kaul Singh Thakur, Health and Family Welfare Minister who is also the Chairman of State Red Cross Managing Committee said that efforts would be made to bring the employees working in District Red Cross Societies for more than 10 years under government contract. It would also reduce the burden on Red Cross at district level and asked the Deputy Commissioners to send the list of such employees to Health department so that appropriate action could be taken at government level. He directed the Deputy Commissioners to accelerate the pace of Red Cross activities at district level to strengthen the state activities and organize at least five blood donation camps so that shortage of blood could be meet out. He said that the person donating blood more than 100 times should be honored to motivate others.
Shri Thakur said that health indicators in the State were very good, however, he expressed concern about the child sex ratio and said that more efforts were needed to improve it. He added that programme like 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' would go a long way in improving the child sex ratio in the State.
Smt. Pratibha Singh, Vice Chairperson, HP State Red Cross Management Committee also gave her valuable inputs regarding income generation for State Red Cross.
Dr. Baldev Thakur, Director, Health Services conducted the proceedings of the meeting and apprised about the various activities of the State Red Cross.
Smt. Darshana Devi, Lady Governor also attended the meeting.
Deputy Commissioners, Shri P. S. Rana, Secretary, State Red Cross, Life members & other members of State Red Cross, members of Executive Committee, H.P. Red Cross Hospital Welfare Section, Official and Non Official Members of State Red Cross also gave their valuable suggestions during the meeting.
Officers of various departments and staff of State Red Cross attended the meeting.
