CAIT WRITE TO SONIA & OTHER OPPOSITION LEADERS

GST IS TRADE-INDUSTRY ISSUE & NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE

Vijyender Sharma
SHIMLA-----After holding a Conference of trade & industry on GST on Wednesday at New Delhi , the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) today sent a communication to Mrs. Sonia Gandhi urging her to cooperate for smooth passage for GST in Parliament. The roadblocks for GST are giving dismal picture of one of the most important tax reform in the Country-said CAIT. The CAIT has sent similar communications to prominent leaders of different political parties including Shri Rahul Gandhi, Shri Sharad Yadav, Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav, Ms. Mayawati and others.

In its communication, the CAIT has said that GST is more an issue connected with trade & industry rather than a political issue. It is regretted that so far no attempt has been made by political fraternity to engage with trade & industry on this vital issue.

It is further said that it is a known fact that the trade & industry is subject to multiple taxation & multiple authorities making the tax administration more complex.  Subsuming of various Central & State level taxes in GST will simplify & rationalise tax structure and will make compliance more easy and will also offload stakeholders from much paperwork. However, the stalling of GST Bill has vitiated our hopes to a great extent.

It is pertinent to mention that we also have our own concerns about proposed GST but stalling of passage of GST Bill in Parliament, is depriving us from the opportunity of being heard since after passing of the Bill in Parliament, the process of separate legislation for Central GST (CGST), Integrated GST (IGST) will be tabled in Parliament and State GST (SGST) will be passed by State legislatures and such time will give an opportunity to the stakeholders to submit their concerns-added CAIT.

The CAIT has also sent a copy of the resolution adopted at the GST Conference held on Wednesday and has sought an appointment with all leaders including Mrs. Gandhi.
