Dharmshala----The Dharamshala International Film Festival (5-8 November, 2015) aims at screening the best of contemporary independent cinema from India and abroad. The third day of the festival has seen award winning films from around the globe, including a specially curated children's package and a selection of Indian shorts.
The day began with BhaskarHazarika's hair-raising feature, Kothanodi, at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA). The film received a positive response from the audience, and Hazarika was present for the post-screening Q&A session. Film curator Monica Wahi has selected a package of children's films for DIFF 2015's special programme, Reel Neverland. Two films from that package were screened today- Astrid Bussink'sGiovanni and the Water Ballet, and Alê Abreu's animation, The Boy and The World.
Israeli filmmaker, TalyaLavie, presented her feature film, Zero Motivation, which has won the Nora Ephron Award for Women in Film at the Tribecca Film Festival. Following this was the International premiere of acclaimed Japanese director, Kaoru Ikeya's documentary, Lung Ta. Ikeya and his film's main protagonist, Kazuhiro Nakahara, were present for the screening at TIPA. The Club House venue hosted screenings of the Indian shorts selection, curated by Marathi independent filmmaker, UmeshVinayakKulkarni. The American short, One Night in Hollywood was also presented, by its producer and actor, Markus Reymann. The day also saw a panel discussion addressing women and their role in the film industry. The panel, Film and the Female Gaze, was moderated by DIFF director and filmmaker, RituSarin, and consisted of four women filmmaker from four different countries: AnkaSchmid (Switzerland), DechenRoder (Bhutan), TalyaLavie (Israel), and RuchikaOberoi (India).
Swiss director, AnkaSchmid, presented the Asian premiere of her documentary, Wild Women – Gentle Beasts at TIPA, while Boris Lojkine's feature on immigrants, Hope, was screened at Club House, followed by Polish director, MałgorzataSzumowska'sBody. The day ended with Abhay Kumar's hybrid documentary, Placebo. Kumar was present for the screening and answered audience questions after the screening.
