NAHAN--- Governor Acharya Devvrat called upon all the sections of society especially the Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) to play a significant role in eradicating social evils from society. He also urged them to come forward and generate awareness on vital issues like drug abuse, adopting organic agriculture, keeping the surroundings clean and environment protection etc. by launching vigorous campaigns in the interest of people of the state.
He was addressing a meeting held with the representatives of Chamber of Commerce and NGOs to discuss about his four-point agenda for the betterment of society and state at Nahan in District Sirmour, today.
The Governor urged the industrialists to participate in social activities and fulfill their social responsibilities by contributing towards these causes so that people could be benefited. He suggested them to put dustbins in various places especially industrial areas besides undertaking other welfare activities.
Detailed discussions were held regarding checking drug abuse and problem of untouchability, promotion of organic agriculture and cow rearing, environment protection, cleanliness campaign and tourism development.
He said the organic food was healthy and nutritious and only healthy citizens made a healthy nation. Organic farming should be promoted in the state in a big way to strengthen the economy of farmers, he added. He also stressed upon cow rearing especially developing indigenous cow breeds whose milk had been proven best in researches conducted by the experts. He said that concrete efforts should be made for promoting and strengthening organic farming and stressed upon holding camps for farmers to acquaint them about traditional farming practices, preserving indigenous seeds and producing organic manure from cow dung etc.
The Governor stressed upon launching aggressive campaigns against drug abuse as youth were under its grip and the number of youth falling victims to drug consumption and alcoholism was increasing everyday. He said that youth were the future of the country and unless they grew responsible the nation could not progress.
He also underlined the need for educating people about cleanliness and eradicating social evils like untouchability. He said that unless all sections of society participated in the campaign, the society would witness no change. The children could be appropriate ambassadors to spread the message across the society as they were future citizens and could be
sensitized easily as they had willingness to learn. They could further educate their family members and others in neighbourhood, he added.
Acharya Devvrat said that Himachal Pradesh had been blessed with immense beauty and tourism promotion activities with special focus on cleanliness was extremely essential for preserving the beauty of tourist places. He suggested plans for beautification of tourist spots besides developing tourist destinations in remote and unexplored areas with hotels, good food and other facilities. He said this sector had potential to generate employment avenues to youth and strengthening their economy as well as of the state.
Deputy Commissioner, B.C Badaliya welcomed the Governor. He apprised the Governor about the ongoing developmental activities in the district. He said that efforts were being made to educate the rural population about the importance of cleanliness and the panchayats of the district had received awards also for the same. He said that ' Gau Shalas ' were functional in district in various panchayats and efforts were afoot to construct more.
