SHIMLA--------The High Court of Himachal Pradesh has directed the Secretary (Social Justice & Empowerment) to the Government of H.P. to provide boarding or lodging to the inmates of the institutions, which have been ordered to be closed down by the government, within a period of one week, in the nearby Government run Bal Ashrams/Balika Ashrams.
The orders were passed by Justice Rajiv Sharma on a petition filed by the Umang Foundation, Kasumpati to highlight the hardships caused to the inmates of the 23 institutions/Bal Ashrams/Balika Ashrams, which were ordered to be closed down by government’s orders dated January 22, 2014 as these were not registered under the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act.
The Court said that there was no illegality in the government’s orders as the said institutions are required to be necessarily registered under the Juvenile Justice Act, but since the inmates of these institutions are either orphans or belonging to lowest strata of society, they were required to be provided boarding & lodging in order to mitigate their hardships and to avoid disruption of their studies as the annual examinations are also near.
